The clip above talks a little bit about The Colour of Beauty, a short documentary that examines racism in the fashion industry. The 16-minute piece follows Renee Thomson as she embarks on the NYC chapter of her quest to be a top model in an industry where White is always en vogue and not being black is the new black.
I almost didn’t make it past the first minute of this film because I found Renee apologizing for being black; as if she chose it and it was a mistake that she wishes she could take back. And though there are some moments where she sounds almost excruciatingly apologetic, I do recognize said moments as the unfortunate residue of internalized feelings of inadequacy that come with the constant rejection, oftentimes, down right disregardance and even prohibition of black women in the fashion industry.
Ultimately, I think it’s a waste to try to fit into a mold that wasn’t shaped for us in the first place: literally or figuratively. FUBU was on to something; For Us By Us. The concept is a manifestation of the Kwanzaa principe, Kujichagulia which means self-determination. To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. Not just about how to “belong,” but how we can have our own.
